Match Report. 78cc vs Shipham AFC

Ah, the beautiful game, with it’s ebb and flow and natural drama, and oh, the timeless wonder of the english countryside! A ramble up the Mendips on a Sunday morning is a simple and spiritually nourishing pleasure. Fortunately for the travelling 78’s the steep gradient of the Shipham pitch presented an opportunity to combine both amateur football and hill climbing for 90 minutes in the gorgeous Somerset sunshine. Earlier in the week the gaffer had issued a strategy memo to the squad. Not wishing to complicate matters only two tactics were to...

The King is Dead Long Live the King!

ULTRAS 3 HILLCREST DOGGERS 2 Nige has picked up where Dom left off. Masterminding an important victory against superior opposition, Hillcrest Doggers. Our first game of the season was a cup game and this was a cup game that had it all. A battling underdog victory. A winning goal in the final minutes. An amazing save. The lot. Nige sent us out in an unfamiliar shape with a few players in unfamiliar roles. We took a bit of time to get our heads together and the opposition were making it doubly hard for us as they were a bang tidy team...

78CC vrs. Fishpods Legends

We arrived at Frys spanking new clubhouse/airport terminal 2 short of a full team. Reception informed us our changing room was double booked so we had to change in the skittle alley. The gaffer confessed he hadn’t brought a football. Wayne volunteered to goalkeep. The keepers Jersey was huge and went down to his knees. The gaffer confessed he hadn’t brought any keepers gloves. Reception informed us we were playing on pitch 13. The Nine emerged blinking into the bright sunshine. In the distance Fishponds Legends squad of 15 were...

Match Reports

Saturday 2nd Cricket! After last weekends washout, the Midweek CIL game cancelled and Knowle CC pulling out of today’s game vs the Wuns it was very nice indeed to be at the Farm. The strip hadn’t dried after all the rain and the sky was lowering as the skippers tossed, so when Alex – undertaking skippering duties due to Jeffo’s tender groin -reported that we were batting, the general assumption was that Grendels captain must have called correctly. Nope, set a target and then bowl them out, that was Alex’s plan....

Match Report: Friendly XI v Long Ashton Occasionals

After a miserable day of steady rain it’s amazing this game got played. Thanks must go to LA skipper David who remained positive throughout, and to their newly purchased massive tarpaulin which kept the wicket bone dry. Shall we buy one? During the coin toss said skipper pointed out that the cowboys hadn’t won this fixture since 2010 when we played them at Winford pissed out of our minds after watching England beat Slovenia down the pub. Winning the toss we decided to bat. Simon and Iggy opened up and immediately set about putting their...

Match report 20/20 cup V Failand and Portbur

The full moon moving out of Scorpio give’s you a chance to “shed your skin”, put the demons to rest, and you know, start fresh. So with a few drop outs, some last minute Tinklering and 11 men selected and confirmed, in the usual Cowboy styley, we headed out through the rush hour traffic to the peacful setting of failand and portbury cc. It was obvious on arrivial that they were taking this cup tie seriously, their team was out and warming up and they looked sharp. The inner ring markers were out implying that these guys...

20/20 Hope Match Report

A last minute change of venue meant this was played up at the Phoenix ground. The pitch was very wet and was unprepared so was slow, but with even bounce. Cowboys decided to bat first. Tom made a nice looking 39 from 39 balls, putting on 58 for the 2nd wicket with Angelo. Angelo and Evan then slogged and scrambled until Angelo was calling for the defibrillator. Eventually Ange reached his half century from the last ball of our innings – 50 from 43 balls including 2 sixes. Cowboys total 149 for 3. Once Alex had bowled Hopes opener who...

One Result

04/08/2013 One of the weekends matches escaped the rain this weekend: the Saturday 2s beat Bath Exiles by 2 wickets. Exiles hit 158 with Barny getting 2 for 26. In reply the Cowboys got the runs for the loss of 8 wickets with 3.2 overs spare. Ubberpops scored 47 not out and Gandpa Kelly scored 28. Scorecard DC1 reports thus: The Exiles first innings score of 158 for 6 down, amassed in 3 or 4 sessions between heavy showers, was a bit higher a total than skipper Jeff would have been happy with – and when the Cowboys reply faltered badly at 5...

Dodging The Rain

Dodging The Rain

Both Saturday games got to about 20 overs and then were rained off. The Sundays managed to dodge the showers and beat Peasdown St John b y 101 runs. Dunc reports it thus: Hey Pop Pickers! It was a slightly less glorious weather day in paradise, as the Cowboys Team Sunday (CTS) swaggered into Rose Green to defend a winning run which had put them into a creditable 3rd place in Div 2. Continuing that winning run against Peasedown St John (PSJ), the current incumbents of 2nd position, would make the Cowboys look very much like the main...
