Played 2 lost 2 innit, although we did improve – from 41 allout in the first game (Imola Srilankans) to 42 all out in the second (ModenaPakistanis). Fortunately the Mondiai Antirazzisti provides a sporting arenawhere participating is truly more important than winning. With only 4Cowboys/girls there to play cricket we were even less likely to compete at thisvery unfamiliar form of the game than we’ve been in previous years.Temperatures were in the high 30s, and we got great support from Cowboy footballersWill and Chalky, who played both games, and persuaded Corin to battle his hangoverand take the field. A stray spectator, Imran, made the eight for a team in thefirst game and his pals Imran and Shabbaz played for us in the second match.

Did we have any highlights? Bill won’t forget his 6 overextra cover in a hurry, Amanda was delighted with three 4s in her 15, Anny willbe telling you all about her 2 not out and we’re expecting Chalky to startcoming to nets. In the end, we’re playing cricket, but not as we know it andsomething very strange would have to happen for us to turn over sides who playthis way all the time.

The guy organizing the cricket was Eduardo, who plays forthe Italian national team. He provided the crucial insight when he pointed outthat, worldwide, more people play tape-ball ‘street’ cricket than ever get toplay with a hard red ball in whites on a proper pitch. Our own Kalu will tellyou that the first time he played with a hard ball was when he came to theCowboys. These guys are looking for 90 plus runs from their 8 overs . It’s ashortened pitch, and the bowlers bowl to hit the stumps, as fast as possible,getting wickets from a swing and miss or caught on the boundary, which is whereall the fielders are. When there are evenly matched teams the games are fastand furious and thrilling to watch. No pads or gloves, and lightweight batswith a prominent ‘scoop’ like you see in pictures from olden days.

The Mondiali Antirazzisti is a fantastic event, & allEaston Cowboys & Girls should make the pilgrimage. It is primarily afootball frenzy, with something like 200 teams competing, coming from all overthe World. With a bit of luck going their way the Easton Cowboys football teammight have progressed beyond their group stage, but the fortune andhalf-chances went the wrong way for them at crucial times. In past years theCowboys/girls have performed strongly in the Mondiali basketball tournament.The partying at Mondiali is exceptional – a dynamic combination of footballterrace chanting, naval distress flares and smoke bombs, soundtrack provided bylive ska/punk bands.

Punky, Kim, Jack D, Angelo etc...

Yes, it happened. At the beginning of May a group of fifteen Cowboys and Cowgirls ventured out again to the West Bank for another ten days of football (and volleyball), fun and falafel. There were a few differences to our last visit in April 2007. This time we mostly played in small villages, as opposed to the large centres of population like Bethlehem; we played in Israel itself, against the Anarchists Against the Wall group from Tel Aviv and we also had a more disparate group, made up of some old faces, a few new faces and a couple of our comrades from Republica.

But everything went according to plan. We all got into the country and rendezvous-ed at the agreed point. Even on the football pitch things went, well, better than expected, considering our wafer-thin squad.

It was as gruelling as last time – nine games in eight days – and everyone will have their own personal highlights. Who can forget our whistle stop VIP tour of Palestine’s leading fun fair, Megaland? Or our driver Shaher (aka ‘The General’) and his habit of inflicting the Backstreet Boys’ classic ‘Show Me The Reason For Being Lonely’ on us at regular intervals?

Then there was our final game in Traffur. As the tour bus wended its way down to the foot of the village where a floodlit stadium was carved out of a disused quarry, we were besieged by scores of kids. As we went in at half time all we could hear were hundreds of young voices, all chanting in unison ‘EASTON COW-BOYS! EASTON COW-BOYS!’ None of us will ever forget it.

Along the way we learned a hell of a lot about the realities of the occupation. We also donated over £1000 to the building of a school in the community of Khallet Zakariya that is surrounded on all sides by illegal Israeli settlements. And we confirmed the Cowboys twinning arrangement with Tulkarem Sports Club. There is already talk of maybe getting a Palestinian side over here next year.

On top of this, there is also a cinematic masterpiece in the offing. Jesse took a camera out and is currently working on a film of the tour that will see light of day before too long. More news on that soon.

Well done to everyone who contributed to making this happen. Hopefully we can do it all again at some point in the none-too-distant future..

Kampfende Herzen from Freiburg hold a small tournament near the black mountains which goes from the 2nd of July to the 4th, it is a lovely place, good pitch and 11-a-side and you can camp next to the pitch.

Modiali antirazzisti in bologna, Italy. 7th-11th of July.

This one is a very big 7-a-side tournament with a big music stage, an outdoor dj/dance area, a music/beer tent and two large beer tents with a variety of food and stalls. It brings teams and fans of anti racist and anti fascist football from all around the world together for a great weekend and it won’t kill your funds! Also, I have been the past 3 years and everytime I have enjoyed the 35 degree heat on top of the fantastic time i’ve had there.

“Welcome aboard …”

Here’s some more information about the big event of the summer, Yorkshire’s Alternative Word Cup 2010, which is now officially called “Republica Internationale’s Flying Circus” (because it’s right next to a very active little airfield with lots of pleasure flights by small aeroplanes, gliders, etc).

This site for 3 days of football and music is near the small village of Rufforth, just 8 kilometres from the beautiful ancient city of York) , from Friday 6 August until Sunday 8 August . We have teams from at least seven countries confirmed so far – Belgium, Brazil (yes ! all the way from Sao Paolo Brazil !) , England, Germany, Lithuania, Poland and Scotland.

As you know we have a women’s 7-a-side tournament, a men’s 11-a-side tournament and a men’s 7-a-side tournament. The 11-a-side tournament will start at 5 p.m. (17.00) on Friday 6 August, so please arrive to set up your tents before that. Unfortunately the site will NOT be open on the Thursday night (if you need to arrive in Yorkshire on Thursday, let us know and we will suggest other accommodation).

We expect that all participants will camp for 3 nights, as our event will finish late on Sunday, and depart on Monday 9th August.

More transport information is in the attached document if you have not yet arranged you transport. Please let us now as soon as possible if your group will need picking up in our minibus from an airport (for example Leeds or Manchester) or from York railway station. (There will be a small charge for the minibus but a lot less than public transport).

“Republica Internationale’s Flying Circus” aims to raise money to help some fantastic projects, including:

• “KIPTIK “ health and water projects in the Zapatista communities of Mexico (started by the Cowboys!)

• St Pauli women’s sister project in Kenya – “Old is Gold” – Nairobi women’s football & social projects

• The White Ribbon Campaign – about men challenging men’s violence against women

• Other great causes !

Because of the large advance costs we face in hosting the tournament, we will ask you to pay your tournament entry fee in advance (and we will shortly be contacting you with the amount and the bank details, etc.). If any of you wish to organise a “fund-raiser” event for us in advance, to benefit, the good causes listed …then YES PLEASE !!

We have also decided that all “tournament currency” purchased in advance of the tournament will have a 10% discount …More details to follow.

As you know, these tournaments are financed by the amount of alcohol sold at the tournament bars. We request that guests do not bring their own alcohol to the event because we will provide plenty for everyone !

As well as football and alcohol, we have lined up some great bands to play for you but we are also in need of some circus “acts” based on the theme of “flying”, or “circus”, or even both for Saturday nights entertainment !!

We would like to invite you to our very first Football extravaganza.

Yard Football present ‘ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST(COUNTRY).

It will take place over the weekend 28-30th of May. The venue for this will be the beautiful Devon village of Beesands situated next to the beach just 7 miles from Kingsbridge. The opening ceremony and draw will take place on the Friday evening at 9PM by the pitch so please make sure at least one member of your team attends for a few beers and the big Draw.!

The first match will be played from 10am on the Saturday morning with the Finals and Play Offs on the Sunday morning from 10am. There will be six(6) teams.

Beesands truly is in deepest darkest Devon so we have organised Food for the Saturday and Sunday evenings for a small price. (Price to Follow as and when we know)

Sun: Big Fat Curry Night

There is a Pub in the village and shops near by so it is well worth stocking up for Breakfast and lunch before you arrive.

We will ask for a donation of £70 per team to cover costs and all profits will help bring LOS AUTONOMOUS FC from Sau Paulo in Brazil to this summers Alternative World Cup in Yorkshire.

We have camping in the village which is about a 15 Min walk down to the pitch.
